A Simple Project...

I worked on a simple project yesterday!  Recently, I bought this set of coasters for $2.00 at a thrift store.  They are very nice quality coasters, just not the style I wanted.

I have seen coasters made on tiles, which are very pretty, but these are great because they already have cork backings...

I was looking for a strong graphic look, and took some vintage bingo number call sheets that I had...

and scanned several copies...

I traced the coaster outline on the scans and cut them out...

I lightly sanded the face of each coaster to help with adhesion, and added a smooth layer of Matte Collage Pauge from Aleene (you can use whatever you like for decoupage...this is just what I like).  I used a disposable foam brush, as it's hard to clean brushes used with this stuff.

I centered the paper over the coaster and smoothed it with a brayer (if you don't have a brayer, just smooth with your hand).  Smoothing out the paper will let a little of the glue seep out along the edges, and you can press down any paper overage over the edge.

I let them dry completely, and then did two coats of the Collage Pauge as a sealer... not waterproof, but water resistant... and the matte finish is smooth and attractive. (UPDATE- My friend Susan deGeneres left me a great comment hint- 2 coats of spar varnish will make them waterproof! Check out the first comment below- thanks, Susan!)

I love how they turned out!  You could do this with sheet music, book pages, scrapbooking or wrapping paper, etc., and I think it would be even be fun to do small paper collages on them!  The possibilities are endless and it would be fun to do with children, too!   I'll have my eyes open, when I'm out thrifting, for more coasters to re-do!
My friend Kim over at Numinosity has wonderful coasters on her post right now, (great minds think alike LOL!) - and is giving them away!  Stop by and check her out!

  6. Great idea! I guess great minds do think alike since I have decoupaged coasters on my giveaway right now.
It's neat to see how you're doing them and they're graphically pleasing. How I love the old Bingo cards. Now if I'd only thought to scan the ones you gave me before I collaged on them!

  15. Hi linda,

I love your coasters. I've been wanting to play around with collage and I think a project like this would be a great way to get started.

If you put on a couple coats of Spar Varnish (a marine varnish) it will waterproof them. This stuff will even keep paper mache from melting in the rain. It's great stuff and readily available at most hardware and big box stores.

Thanks for joining my new blog.

    Hugs,
    Susan
