Rustic Cottage Guest Bedroom

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!  I have been very busy with lots of moving and household projects, but have tried to take some time to relax, too!
Summer is too short!
One of the projects I have been working on is a little makeover
of one of our guest bedrooms at the lake!

This is how it looked when I last shared it...a tiny, but cozy room...
and perfect for the project I had in mind.

I'm joining with my fellow bloggers from the Thrift The Look Blog Hop!

Thrift The Look Cottage Blog Hop

We choose a style (this time it is Cottage) and an inspiration photo. Then we get busy doing our version of the space with as many thrift store finds as we can!
A big thank you to Sarah of Sadie Seasongoods for setting this all up for us!

My inspiration was this photo...a Sign Inspired Guest Bedroom from Country Living!  So it's Rustic Cottage Style for me!
I love everything about this space and was very inspired by it!
Of course the sign called out to this graphic loving girl...

I found these two signs at the thrift store for $2 for both. I always pick up framed signs when I see them...so great for sign making!

I gave them several coats of white paint to cover the old graphics, and painted the frames black, so they would match.

Then I used stickers to trace around for a pattern. I stick the stickers on cloth first, so they aren't as sticky...less chance of pulling off paint.  I made a Marble and Granite sign, like the inspiration, but changed the name to our town...for a little fun.

I distressed the paint when it was dry, for a rustic look.

Finally, the signs were glued and screwed together...corner brackets from the craft store helped create the inspiration look, too.

It is sitting on a picture ledge I had found at a thrift store, too.

The linens were pretty in the inspiration photo...lots of matelasse!
Luckily I found a big bag of matelasse pieces at a garage sale several years ago (for $5!).  I started with a white coverlet quilt, also a thrift store find, and topped it with a matelasse throw, along with another matelasse throw at the foot of the bed.  I used two matelasse shams, and pillows I already had.  The striped pillow was from IKEA.

The matelasse gives lots of texture!  The inspiration photo had a lovely old woven coverlet with a beautiful pattern.  Alas I did not find a similar one...but I do have a thrifted table runner, that gave a striking, similar look!

You might notice that I painted the headboard and footboard black, too! The 80's oak piece was part of a matched set we bought years ago...the parts were separated and used for other projects over the years...so I had no qualms about painting this.  I love the look now!

Another element of the inspiration room was the stack of boxes!  I used boxes I found at garage sales and thrift stores over the years.  This wood one, received a wash of white paint and some letters.

For summer, I thought a touch of red would be nice in the room...

I used red geraniums in the thrifted jar...

I stacked my boxes on two thrifted benches.
The old plaster deer was a thrifted find, too...

The quilts, basket, and some of the oars were thrift store finds...

I decorated for summer...almost everything on the mantel top was a thrifted find.

I love this old gameboard...it was a garage sale find.

I added my husband's family farm plat map, and a pillow cover from where I was born...

An old 48 star flag...

Now,  I thought I'd show you how to get this look without the matelasse and table runner!  I simply used the white quilted coverlet, and layered another quilt at the foot of the bed.

I used white cotton shams instead of the matelasse...

It gives much the same look!

I enjoyed this project so much...and love the new room makeover!

All the pieces you've pulled in to create this look are so awesome... the 48 star flag, all the boxes, your DIY signs, and of course I'm loving the black makeover of the headboard/footboard. Your room is welcoming and just so beautiful, and the red geraniums are the perfect pop!! What a fun hop :)

  8. I absolutely LOVE every element in your new room - what a smashing idea to repaint new signs over old ones. I see the mass-produced signs at thrifts more and more so that's a fabulous idea. Seriously, WELL DONE!!!
