Fun Thrift Store Finds and a Sign Project

Time to share a few fun finds!
It's always a great day doing a little treasure hunting!
I'll share my prices with you, too.

Fun Thrift Store Finds

I love this old fly fishing creel basket
that will be used in our decor at the lakehouse.
I paid more than I usually do for thrift store finds...$9.99...because it is a keeper.

I found two blue cheese crocks...the spatter glaze is so pretty.  75 cents for both.

And I found this wonderful tall covered demijohn bottle!
It was $7.50...a bargain for one of these.

My last $1 find was a more unusual piece...my husband looked at
me like I was nuts when I picked it up and placed it in the cart.
It is a long piece of galvanized metal.

It is a front face piece for perforated store shelving.

Industrial looking, with a great worn patina.

I thought it would make a perfect sign project piece!
So it became a vintage style sign for the lakehouse.

I started by designing out my basic sign on Picmonkey {affiliate link}.
I printed out the Beach View words, enlarged to the size I wanted.

I tried using white transfer paper, and rubbing graphite on the back, but it wasn't transferring the pattern well.  Finally, I used orange chalk on the back, and traced...leaving a faint image.  Then I pencilled over it to get a good image for painting.

The MOTEL section of the sign was done by tracing stickers for the pattern.

After  hand painting in the pattern, I shadowed it, and distressed it.

I love how it turned out!  I'll be looking for more pieces for sign making!

Until next time...

  1. LOVE the sign and you got some really good deals on your other 'bargains'. I had a ton of those cheese crocks but disposed of them (idiot that I am). Years ago most of our local cheese came in crocks like that--not any more!

I hope you have a blessed, wonderful Thursday-xo Diana

  6. I really look forward to your posts -
in fact, if I see one posted, I open it first! People looked at me like I was nuts (last spring) when I was searching for a kreel for our lake room. I did finally find one, as well as a really cute string of wooden fish. BTW if you hang any fishing poles - old fish scales work really well!

  8. Excellent, and what did the mister say about the finished product? He should have known you’d turn the metal into something great.

  9. I really wish we had thrift stores like yours in my town!! Great finds! And I love the sign you painted for the lake. The galvanized finish gives it a vintage look. Fun!

  10. Love your finds. Have you noticed, referring to the $9.99 price of the creel, that Goodwill has increased its prices considerably in the last month or so and that most of the things you really want are, in fact, $9.99? I think, at least in Colorado, they are compensating for all of the 50% off sales they schedule, which used to be only every other Saturday, but are now more frequent.

    1. Thank you! I always try to shop with donation coupons or a discount to pay less...but sometimes I'll pay that $9.99, if I have to lol.
