A Farmhouse Cupboard Re-Do For The Porch...and a Free E-Book...

For a few years now, I have been on the hunt for a big farmhouse-style cupboard for the sunporch.  We have a big dining table out there and I wanted something to hold my decorative brown transferware and serving pieces for family dinners out there.  I just never found what I was looking for, on a budget.  Then a few months ago, I found this unfinished hutch top at the thrift store...

It got me thinking that maybe I could put together my own piece.  I thought of a big dresser we bought back in the 80's.  Well made, with lots of storage, it is nice wood (and I know many of you would never touch it)...but I hate the orange-y 1980's stain color and the bright brass fixtures.  It has been hidden down in a guest room for years, unused.  So, I didn't feel too bad re-doing this piece...

I decided on a simple re-do with DecoArt's Chalky Finish paint in Everlasting with their clear wax finish...these products are available in Michaels and Home Depot stores now.

One coat...

and then a second...

I then distressed the piece and sealed with clear wax.  The chalky finish paint goes right over the metal handles for a new look, too.

I LOVE how it turned out...

Perfect in the sunporch for storing my goodies...

It was great to create this using a dresser I already had and a $15 thrift store hutch top...

I am happy to have this project included in DecoArt's new
It is being offered over at FaveCrafts.com and is full of Chalky Paint projects, instructions, and hints and is a FREE download!  I hope you will enjoy it!

I am a blogger for DecoArt and received product and compensation for this project...all opinions are my own!

Until next time...

  2. Gorgeous, Linda! The shelf piece is just wonderful by itself, but married to the dresser it is a really great looking storage piece. Don't you love when things work out so well like this.

  10. I'm usually a purist and don't like pieces redone. HOWEVER I'm also not a fan off the 80s staining either. Beautiful job creating this piece.

  15. Ok, Betsy made me scroll back up to see your profile photo - looking good! I love that project. Had no idea you could paint over the handles. I was just looking at that color at Home Depot the other day, so I may just have to grab some this week to finish up a ten minute project that has taken me three weeks to do. Hope you enjoyed your weekend!
