Two Days, Eight Fights, and Four Screw-Ups...

Well, what's a girl to do when it's FREEZING outside, your husband has a week off, and you're still getting over the flu?  Pull down wallpaper and put in a new floor, of course...

If you've been reading my blog for awhile (a LONG time)...you might remember when I started re-doing my kitchen/dining area a few years back...here's the link to that 2011 post.  Well, life got in the way and I finally finished painting the cabinets last summer.  For over a year, there were 5 different colors on those cabinets. (Don't I make you feel better about YOUR projects?)  This is how the walls looked last week...a beautiful Raymond Waites paper we put up 15 years ago...
and one I have wanted gone for at least the last five.

Well, it's gone now!  For me, it had become so much visual clutter...I do have a whole roll left for projects, though. The rug is gone, too...

It tore down easily, actually was fun...seeing the old primer appear.

Stripping off the old glue...has been a chore...

An old friend...my 1980's stenciling reappeared...(what is with all those nail holes?)

The hutch is empty and moved out of the way...

 and cabinets are emptied, too...

The old flooring was early Pergo...

we ripped it up and were ready to lay down something new...

OH it's going to be so much better...

Board and batten will be going in around the space, and a new wall color going up, too.  The reveal will be coming soon...

Thought you might like to see my dear husband's
addition to our shopping list...

He does know how to make me laugh!  To be continued...

Until next time...

  1. I can't wait to see the reveal, Linda! I can totally relate, but our number of fights was higher I think!

  2. It's perfectly understandable for such a large project to get hijacked as life interferes. Having your husband home for a whole week sounds like a good idea, but it doesn't feel like it sometimes. I love that he has a sense of humor about it. What you've done so far looks fantastic! I know it must feel wonderful to step back and see what you've accomplished ... and it makes the memory of the fights and screw ups start to fade. :)

  3. And I thought our kitchen remake was a pain! I can't wait to see what you have done. It's makes me feel better that I am not alone out there. We started this redo during Christmas and New Years and it will need to be continued next year, same time, same place. You have given me the courage now to go ahead and post what we have started and not be embarrassed that it's going to take until next year, or maybe the year after, to finish it! Thanks for the post!!! Good luck with yours...I wish I had been keeping track of our fights!

  4. Good for you for getting the project under way. Sometimes just starting is the hardest part...well, unless you are painting kitchen cabinets apparently. lol Love hubster's list! Can't wait to see the whole project done. xo Diana

  15. all good things come to those who wait...wait and wait lol
You had me laughing out loud with this one.
My husband has sworn to never have me home again during home improvement projects, I agreed.
WOW your room looked very victorian with that paper and the rug together. I can't wait to see the improvements. I am sure it will be streamlined and gorgeous.

  16. Oh, I remember how hard it was to remove that wallpaper glue! Your floor looks gorgeous and I can't wait to see the reveal! Our guest bedroom is nearing the 3 year anniversary of the day I started tearing down wallpaper and there are still a few things to be finished up!

Love the list! You've got to keep a sense of humor when you're working together. :)

  18. LOL, love the list! It looks like "fights" is the clear winner! Big remodeling projects like that never run smoothly, but the results will make all the effort worthwhile in the end!

  22. I gasped when I saw that floor!!! That is gorgeous! Can't wait to see the room finished. I have had five tiny patches of sample paint on my kitchen walls for at least a year. Just can't make up my mind and now I don't even notice them anymore.

  23. I like the way he puts the fights right on the list. That way you won't forget to have one! ;) Sounds like our way of doing things. Love your new floor. Similar to ours I think. And that is the same rug we have in our dining area. Great minds think alike. Mimi

  25. I'm gonna love it, but slap the mister up side the head for keeping track of the fights then add one last slash and declare yourself the winner.

  28. I remember that post! It's going to look great! LOVE the floor! Wish I could make some changes to this house, but we are just renting. Looks like a lot of work though! Can't wait to see more.

  29. A sense of humour is essential for tough house reno jobs. The jobs are tough enough. The peeks look great.

  30. Oh, I think we can all relate to this, Linda! I just love your husband's sense of humor, too. We have had the worst fights when remodeling - once over counters - we laugh about it now! Can't wait to see the big reveal - you must be so excited. I know how long things take - we always figure twice as long (or longer) and 4 times as expensive. That's the rule. :) xo Karen
