Holiday Ice Skates Makeover

Ice skates are something I have always used in my Christmas and winter decorating!  You might remember seeing some of these photos in past years...

Here in Minnesota, skates are easy and inexpensive to find in
thrift stores and garage sales, and over the years I have
picked up several pairs...black and white, adult and child sizes.

This week I decided to do a makeover on a pair!

You know I've been all about red in my Christmas decorating this year, so I pulled out the laces and gave the skates two coats of red craft paint.
When dry, I gave them a coat of water based satin varnish.
Then I used a roll of black and white checked ribbon for new laces.

Taping the ribbon ends, helps to feed it through the metal eyelets...

Finally, I attached some light gray fake fur I had around the top
with E6000 glue and held it in place with clothespins until dry.

I really love the way they turned out...it would be fun to try other colors, too!
And I would love to try a plaid cuff or laces...

  2. These are absolutely adorable, Linda! I rarely see these in our stores. We just don't get snow much. Maybe once a year.

  3. Those skates are so festive with the red paint. Love the black and white ribbon as laces too. Great idea! I have a very old pair of black ice skates and now you have my wheels turning about how I can transform them. Have a great weekend!

  4. These are terrific, Linda! At first-when you wrote you painted them red, my heart sort of sank. But darn, girl, you were on point. LOVE!

I appreciate the photos of the ways you have used them over the years. I have mine and I use them on the porch, but always hanging on a nail near the door with greenery tucked in. Time for a change!

  5. Your ice skates now have a Nordic look and I love it! The black and white ribbon ties really are the perfect finishing touch. You can't go wrong with red accents at Christmastime. It's the color of happy. :o)

    Can you believe the weather?!

    Have a good weekend, Linda!

  8. Those are absolutely adorable! Love the furry addition. Speaking of fur, I stored my skates in the shed over the summer and I think someone made a home in them. My dog will not leave them alone now.

  10. These are really cute...and such a good idea for used skates that often are soiled and just can't be cleaned up with polish. Thanks for the idea!
