Signs of Fall in the Garden...

The garden has peaked now and is getting ready for the changes of fall ahead...

The vines are lush and climbing everywhere~ the wild grapevine will make lovely garlands...

But some vines are beginning to show color changes...

Another of our apple trees is heavy with fruit, nearly ready for harvest...

and our peppers are really producing now~ look at this fun purple variety I planted this year...

The hardy mums are setting buds...

and leaves are beginning to turn on some plants...

this mountain ash is turning gold and the berries have turned bright orange...

Another sign of fall... the Monarch butterflies are migrating back south~ so pretty...

The weather is cooler and so enjoyable...I LOVE this time of year!  I wish it would last 6 months, but this IS Minnesota...
Until next time...

Fun Finds and a New Barn Quilt...

The weather is cooler here now and with the wedding over, I was able to get out to a couple of garage sales this week!  Only a few finds to share this week...I love this BIG basket with its decorative handle!  It will be wonderful holding some of my itsy bits and pieces at Junk Bonanza- maybe with lots of old clothespins or full of ephemera word cards...
This apples and berries plate will be so pretty for fall...

and the lovely old crocheted cloth under it was a find this week, too...

I always loving finding old clay pots~ they have a nice patina~ all for $1!  The little dictionary in the picture with them, is full of wonderful pages and illustrations~ ready for scanning and artwork!

One of the most fun finds this week was found as we returned home from the wedding~ another barn quilt!

I took the photos from a distance...and when I was loading the photos, noticed there was another barn quilt on the side building!  If you missed my original post about barn quilts, you can see it here .  I've also written about others I've seen in the past, as well~ see my labels list, if you are interested.  Be sure to check out Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail  a great blog about barn quilts!

I'll get a better pic of that one next trip!

I am joining~

A BIG thank you to all of you~ I really appreciate all of your kind comments and good wishes...

A Lovely Day...

Well, I am back after a whirlwind week!  In an earlier post, I wrote about working hard to get ready for my oldest son and now daughter-in-law's wedding at our family lakehome.  They really didn't want the traditional white tulle, etc~ and were looking to have a more natural style afternoon wedding in the backyard.  Much of this week was spent preparing the yard for the ceremony. I thought I would share some of the set-up with you.   In the above photo you can see the chairs, which were covered with chocolate brown satin covers, and the beautiful arbor which my husband built and I stained.  We decided not to use a runner, for safety's sake, and had the flower girls toss petals in the aisle instead...

We surrounded the arbor with two large urns filled with fountain grass and ivy...it swayed beautifully in the breeze...

He also built this gangplank-style access to the beach~ the posts insured decorative safety for walking onto the dock, or stepping off onto the beach for the evening party here after the dinner reception at a nearby golf club...

There were ferns everywhere...

hydrangea...

and many flowering baskets.   White lights were strung between the trees and on the deck for the evening party.  This is the staircase where my husband and I accompanied my son, and the ring bearer and groomsmen arrived...

This stone pathway was the entryway to the backyard and was romantically lit with tiki lights at night...

The bride and her parents, as well the the bridesmaids and flower girls used the lower doorway, surrounded by ferns and flowers...

The day was hot and humid, but there was shade from the oaks above...

and this table (I hadn't finished this area when I took photos) was set up with programs done on paper fans and the tub was filled with ice and bottled water for the guests...

It was a beautiful and VERY happy day for both families~ most of the participants are pretty private about the photos, but hopefully I can find a few pics from the wedding which I can share.  But I hope you will enjoy seeing this glimpse of the setting!  I'm looking forward to relaxing a little now and stopping by to visit your blogs, and getting caught up on what's been happening in your lives, too!
Until next time...

A Stormy Work Day at the Lake...

This week we spent a couple of work days down at the lake getting ready for our oldest son and fiancee's outdoor wedding there next week (thankfully they do have a backup plan, but hopefully we don't need it)!  It has been so hot and humid lately, making it pretty miserable working outdoors!  My husband powerwashed the deck and stairs~ we did the dock last weekend.  At least he was staying wet with all that water spraying around!  I worked staining a beautiful arbor he built for the ceremony~ this is just the top~ I'll show it finished in another post.

We also trimmed trees and washed down the patios, etc...but we were interrupted by this scary, but gorgeous looking storm...

It was so dark and the water looked aqua reflecting it...

It downpoured and then we got back to work...the deck and stairs cleaned up nicely...

This egret (see him hiding in there) decided to pay a visit...

and we ended up with a beautiful sunset...

Still hot, but so pretty...

Until next time...

Apples and Late Summer Garden Pretties...

This year spring came very early in Minnesota...trees blossomed early...and my apples are ripening early now, too.  Apples were falling off the tree, so I picked one and tasted...and it was sweet!  I picked a couple of big bowls...

There's such a change in the garden...even though it is REALLY hot and humid right now, the garden is showing that fall is on the way... The Mountain Ash berries have turned orange...

the coneflowers and brown eyed susans are in full bloom...

It's been such a hot summer, that I'm welcoming the late summer with open arms...the last half of August and the month of September have always been one of my favorite times of the year!

Until next time...
